Shaanxi Province, located in the interior of China, spans three major physiographic units: the Loess Plateau in Northern Shaanxi, the Guanzhong Plain, and the Qinling-Bashan Mountains in Southern Shaanxi. It features complex and diverse geomorphological types and significant spatial heterogeneity in its ecological environment. As a critical region for ecological conservation and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, it plays a strategic role in national soil and water conservation and food security strategies. Against the dual backdrop of global climate change and rapid urbanization, the land use/land cover pattern in Shaanxi has undergone profound transformations. Particularly, the spatiotemporal evolution of cultivated land resources and its associated ecological effects have become vital topics in the study of regional human-land relationships and sustainable development. This atlas takes Shaanxi Province as its study area and systematically examines the dynamic land use/land cover changes from 2000 to 2023, based on multi-source remote sensing data, geographic information system (GIS) technologies, and long-term ground observation data. It focuses specifically on the spatiotemporal distribution, evolutionary characteristics, and driving mechanisms of cultivated land abandonment. The content encompasses multiple dimensions, including the physical geographical context, data sources and preprocessing methodologies, spatiotemporal evolution of land use/land cover patterns, definitions and identification criteria for abandoned cropland, dynamic maps of abandonment at the prefectural and county levels, and the distribution of abandonment across different slope gradients. The atlas strives to present a comprehensive picture of land use/land cover changes in Shaanxi, moving from macro to micro scales and from the whole to its parts. Regarding research methods and data processing, the atlas employs a unified coordinate system and spatial resolution. A three-year moving window approach is applied to temporally correct the cropland use status, effectively reducing random errors in remote sensing classification and enhancing the accuracy of abandonment identification. Beyond illustrating the spatial distribution of abandonment, the atlas intuitively reflects the transition pathways of cultivated land use status through codes "0→1" (abandonment) and "1→0" (recultivation), providing a visual tool for understanding the dynamic cycle of cultivated land resources. This atlas aims to provide a scientific basis and data support for territorial spatial planning, ecological restoration policy formulation, agricultural resource management, and research on regional sustainable development. By systematically mapping and analyzing land use/land cover and cropland abandonment in Shaanxi Province, we hope to advance the in-depth understanding of the coupling mechanisms within the regional human-earth system and offer a reference paradigm for similar studies in other parts of China. Inevitable limitations exist due to data precision and methodological constraints. Criticisms and suggestions from readers and experts are sincerely welcomed to jointly improve related research.
