Guizhou Province, situated in southwestern China, is renowned for its intricate karst landscape, encompassing mountains, hills, and basins, resulting in a highly heterogeneous ecological environment. As a crucial area for ecological conservation and sustainable development in Southwest China, it holds great significance for national strategies related to soil and water conservation, biodiversity protection, and rural revitalization. Under the combined influence of global climate change and rural population migration, the land use/land cover pattern in Guizhou has experienced substantial changes. Notably, the spatiotemporal evolution of cultivated land resources, especially the phenomenon of cultivated land abandonment, has emerged as a key focus in the exploration of regional human-land relationships and sustainable development.

This atlas selects Guizhou Province as the study area and, relying on multi-source remote sensing data, geographic information system (GIS) technologies, and long-term ground observation data, systematically investigates the dynamic land use/land cover changes from 2000 to 2023. It places special emphasis on the spatiotemporal distribution, evolutionary traits, and driving forces of cultivated land abandonment. The content covers multiple aspects, including the physical geographical setting, data sources and preprocessing methods, spatiotemporal evolution of land use/land cover patterns, definitions and identification criteria for abandoned cropland, dynamic maps of abandonment at the prefectural and county levels, and the distribution of abandonment across different slope gradients. The atlas endeavors to present a comprehensive view of land use/land cover changes in Guizhou, transitioning from macro to micro scales and from the whole to its components. 

In terms of research methods and data processing, the atlas adopts a unified coordinate system and spatial resolution. A three-year moving window method is utilized to temporally correct the cropland use status, which effectively reduces random errors in remote sensing classification and improves the accuracy of abandonment identification. In addition to depicting the spatial distribution of abandonment, the atlas vividly reflects the transition routes of cultivated land use status through codes "0→1" (abandonment) and "1→0" (recultivation), serving as a visual aid for comprehending the dynamic cycle of cultivated land resources.

This atlas aims to provide a scientific foundation and data support for territorial spatial planning, ecological restoration policy formulation, agricultural resource management, and research on regional sustainable development in Guizhou. By systematically mapping and analyzing land use/land cover and cropland abandonment in Guizhou Province, we hope to deepen the understanding of the coupling mechanisms within the regional human-earth system and provide a reference model for similar studies in other karst regions of China.
