Spanning the equator from north to south, the African continent encompasses globally representative geomorphic units such as the Sahara Desert, the Congo Basin, the East African Plateau, and the Southern African tablelands, integrating diverse ecosystems including tropical rainforests, savannas, and deserts/semi-deserts. Its cropland utilization patterns exhibit significant complexity, shaped by the interplay of distinct natural gradients and anthropogenic drivers. This atlas, based on remote sensing monitoring and ground verification data from 2004 to 2023, employs a three-year moving window approach to temporally correct cropland use status, effectively mitigating random fluctuations in remote sensing classification and significantly enhancing the accuracy of abandonment identification. This atlas systematically presents the spatiotemporal differentiation patterns of cropland abandonment in Africa: it reveals the spatial agglomeration characteristics of high-abandonment areas such as the southern fringe of the Sahara, the East African Rift Zone, and the rain-fed agricultural regions of Southern Africa, and visually illustrates the dynamic pathways of cropland use change. The contents cover the evolution of abandonment patterns at the regional scale, case studies at the national level, and the distribution of abandonment across different slope gradients, providing a visual tool for understanding the driving mechanisms behind the evolution of cropland resources in Africa. This work aims to provide a scientific basis for formulating food security strategies, combating land degradation, planning ecological restoration projects, and achieving sustainable development goals in Africa. Through multi-dimensional mapping and analysis of the abandonment phenomenon, it seeks to deepen the understanding of the coupling mechanisms within the human-land system in Africa and offer a reference paradigm for cropland resource management research in the Global South. Due to constraints related to data resolution and regional heterogeneity, limitations in this study are inevitable. Criticisms and suggestions from readers and experts are sincerely welcomed to jointly advance related research.
