Unconventional Petroleum Geology, edited by Zou Caineng et al. , is a systematic work on the theories, technologies, and practices of unconventional petroleum geology. The book is organized into three sections: fundamentals of unconventional petroleum geology, unconventional petroleum technologies, and detailed discussions of specific unconventional resources. It discusses the differences between unconventional and conventional oil and gas in terms of formation mechanisms, distribution characteristics, accumulation patterns, production mechanisms, evaluation methods, and exploration and development technologies. This review argues that the book’s main value lies in placing resource types such as shale gas, tight oil and gas, and coalbed methane within a unified geological framework, shifting the reader’s perspective from “finding traps” to “evaluating reservoirs, assessing hydrocarbon potential, and examining treatability. ” It is both theoretically comprehensive and closely connected to China’s unconventional oil and gas exploration and development practices. However, as unconventional oil and gas technologies and the energy transition landscape are changing rapidly, some parts of the book inevitably reflect its temporal context. Further elaboration is still needed on environmental constraints, economic viability, and the development boundaries in the context of low-carbon transition.
