Coating protection is one of the most effective approaches to enhance the durability of marine engineering structures. To address the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures in marine environments, particularly in the splash zone, this study developed a novel single-component alkali-activated anti-corrosion coating. The coating was formulated using granulated blast furnace slag, fly ash, metakaolin, and red mud as precursors, along with a solid alkali activator. To overcome the drawbacks of traditional alkali-activated materials—such as high brittleness, strong hydrophilicity, and inconvenient application—the coating was synergistically modified with styrene-acrylic emulsion, polydimethylsiloxane, polyvinyl alcohol fibers, and sepiolite. The optimal formulation was determined through testing of hydrophobicity, hardness, and bond strength. Subsequently, the anti-corrosion performance of the coating was assessed through accelerated corrosion tests simulating marine environments, and the developed coating was further compared with epoxy coatings, cement-based coatings, and two-component alkali-activated coatings. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy was employed to analyze compositional changes before and after corrosion. The results indicate that the optimized coating exhibits excellent comprehensive performance, achieving a superhydrophobic state with a water contact angle of up to 160° and a bond strength of 2. 65MPa. After 45 dry-wet cycles, the single-component alkali-activated coating applied to both concrete and reinforcing steel surfaces showed no significant peeling or corrosion, maintaining its integrity. The chloride ion penetration depth was only 4. 2mm, which is lower than that of epoxy coatings (5. 1mm) and cement-based coatings (6. 7mm) , but higher than that of two-component alkali-activated coatings (3. 5 mm) . Microstructural analyses reveal that both single-component and two-component alkali-activated coatings possess dense interfaces with few defects, resulting in superior resistance to chloride ingress and dry-wet cyclic corrosion. Although the corrosion resistance of the single-component coating is somewhat lower than that of the two-component coating, its advantages in terms of simple application, low cost, and short construction period highlight its significant application potential. Overall, the single-component alkali-activated coating provides a new technical pathway for the green and functional protection of marine engineering and demonstrates considerable prospects for engineering applications.
