Book Review of Structures:Or Why Things Don’t Fall Down

Structures: Or Why Things Don’t Fall Down by J. E. Gordon is neither a popular science book that merely lists structural phenomena, nor a standard textbook on structural mechanics that derives formulas chapter by chapter. It is more like an introductory handbook for training engineering judgment, bringing together material properties, geometry, load transfer paths, and failure consequences for comprehensive discussion. The author starts with a wide range of objects—from bridges and ships to everyday items—and explains core issues such as tension and compression one by one. He repeatedly reminds readers that judging the reliability of a structure requires not only looking at material strength indicators, but also comprehensively considering stiffness, toughness, defect size, connection methods, processing marks, and long-term service conditions. What makes this book most valuable is that it does not reduce engineering structures to a set of “correct formulas. ” Instead, it first guides readers to learn how forces are transmitted, where critical points may appear, and where failure typically initiates. For readers in mechanical engineering, this book can provide a layer of structural intuition that is particularly easy to overlook before learning professional knowledge. That is, truly good design is often not about simply thickening components or switching to higher-strength materials, but about making informed trade-offs among strength, weight, stiffness, toughness, cost, and manufacturability.
