Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience is a major representative work of Yi-Fu Tuan’ s humanistic geography. In this book, Tuan discusses the relationship between “space” and “place, ” and attempts to rethink the connection between humans and their environment from the perspectives of human experience, emotion, and daily life. He argues that space is not simply an objective physical container; rather, it gradually acquires meaning through people’s long-term living, perceiving, and practicing. “Place, ” in turn, is formed precisely on the basis of this accumulation of experience. This review focuses on the distinction between space and place, the formation of sense of place, and spatial problems in modern society. It also comments on the book’s theoretical value in humanistic geography against the backdrop of urbanization. This review argues that the book breaks through the research path of traditional positivist geography, which only focused on objective spatial structures, by bringing human emotional experience back into geographical research. It also offers new directions for understanding place identity in modern cities.
