Social Justice and the City is both a foundational classic of Marxist geography and a core text that catalyzed the “spatial turn” across the humanities and social sciences. Its significance in human geography today cannot be overstated. In the 1970s, David Harvey refused to continue following the conventional path of closed-door research in positivist geography. Instead, he brought Marxist political economy into the analytical framework of geography, dissecting the processes of capital circulation and rent operation step by step. He clearly explained how the spatial patterns of capitalist cities were gradually shaped, and exposed the deep-seated roots behind spatial differentiation, social polarization, and urban-rural development imbalance. Those regional disparities that appear to have evolved “naturally” are, in the final analysis, nothing more than shadows cast by profit-seeking capital in space. What makes this book most remarkable is that it truly brought “spatial justice” from a peripheral topic to the very center of geographic research. It is not a closed-cdoor exercise in abstract theoretical criticism; every line carries a clear practical orientation. It not only thoroughly restructured the academic paradigm of urban studies but also, from the perspective of development geography, provided a practical set of analytical tools and directions for unpacking the mechanisms of regional inequality and exploring pathways to coordinated urban-crural development. We often talk about development convergence and the improvement of human well-cbeing, but if we cannot see through the capital logic behind spatial patterns, truly fair development becomes even more elusive.
