When Heaven is Silent,How Can It be Represented? From Thunder Deity Image to the Hetu-Luoshu

Through a critical analysis of three types of images—the Thunder Deity illustration, lightningburn patterns, and the Hetu-Luoshu diagrams—as discussed in the Lei Xu chapter of Lunheng, this study enables a systematic understanding of Wang Chong’s theoretical construction regarding the relationship between Heaven and humanity. When Wang Chong’s discourse is re-examined within the broader intellectual context of Han Dynasty theories surrounding the Hetu-Luoshu, it becomes a vital lens for understanding Han-era conceptions of the Heaven-human relationship. The two hermeneutic paradigms-“Mandate- Bestowing” and “Effect-Validation”-each embodying unique theoretical insights, interact with Wang Chong’s philosophical thought in ways that reveal a richly layered academic landscape.
